Yashasvi Jaiswal achieved a special record, 2nd batter to do so after Root

India’s gifted batsman Yassavi Jaiswal may have been bowled out for just 30 runs on the second day of the Pune Test, but he has achieved a remarkable feat. He became the second player to score 1,000 runs in Test matches in 2024.

Leading the way is Joe Root, who has scored 1,305 runs at an average of 60 in 14 Tests this year. Root has scored five centuries and four fifties, his highest score being 262 against Pakistan at Multan.

This year, Jaiswal has scored 1,007 runs at an average of 59.23 and a strike rate of 76 in just 10 Tests. Another double century of 214 runs against England in Rajkot and 209 runs in Vizag were his best performances. This season has really highlighted Jaiswal’s potential after his Test debut of 171 against the West Indies last year. Ben Duckett is third with 957 Test runs this year, while Shubman Gill has scored 692 runs in 9 Tests. In the ongoing Test series against New Zealand, Jaiswal is yet to find his rhythm as India lost the first Test by 8 wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, trailing the series 0–1.

In the 2nd Test, he showed promise with a good start, but was caught at slip by Daryl Mitchell off the bowling of Glenn Phillips after scoring 30 off 60 balls. As India prepares for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Jaiswal’s performance will be crucial.
