WASHINGTON: Nine Indian-Americans are among the last 11 participants selected for the spelling bee competition to be held in the US this year. This shows the dominance of the children of this small ethnic community in this prestigious competition.
The 11 contestants will go head-to-head for the title during the ‘2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals’ on July 8, a statement said on Monday.
Dr J Michael Darnil, Executive Director, Bee said, “It is our honor to announce the finalists of the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee. These participants proved their worth at every stage step by step. We look forward to seeing his wisdom and hard work.
The final round of this year’s competition will be hosted at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida. It will be broadcast live on ESPN 2.
Indian-Americans have dominated the spelling bee competition for the past 20 years, while they make up only one percent of the US population. This competition was canceled in 2020 due to the corona virus epidemic.
